Different Types of Sandwich Panel Cores

polystyrene – are often used when a lightweight and relatively inexpensive building envelope with good rigidity and thermal insulation is required; however, their fire resistance is not very high, which may contraindicate their use in some buildings, e.g., those for storage of hazardous materials;

rock wool – thanks to its properties (including non-combustibility), it has a very high fire resistance – even EI 240, so it is used in installations that must meet strict fire resistance requirements, for example, in warehouses for flammable materials;

of polyurethane foam PIR or PUR – are used in installations where high fire resistance is required – at the level of EI 15-EI 60 (for PIR panels – CFC-free self-extinguishing polyisocyanurate foam); they have excellent thermal insulation properties (especially those with PIR core), are lighter and thinner than wool panels, which reduces transportation and assembly costs, speeds up the execution of the cladding and can also reduce the costs related to the operation of the installation;

closed-cell rigid foam insulation hybrid (approx. 95% by volume), with high thermal insulation and high resistance to fire, as well as to the effects of mold and other fungi; thanks to its closed structure, the foam maintains thermal, fire and mechanical stability in all environmental and atmospheric conditions for many years of use – manufacturers of this type of panels offer up to 40 years of warranty on the insulating properties of the products; the low weight of the elements reduces installation costs.
